Why Engines?

Lithium batteries have about 1 megajoule per kilogram. Gasoline has nearly 40 megajoules per kilogram. An engine whose efficiency is on par with the turbines that power the grid itself is approximately half the cost to operate per watt hour than energy delivered by the grid. Any such vehicle equipped with such an engine is cheaper per mile to operate than a battery electric powered equivalent.

Old Design, Modernized

Based on the Bourke engine, we’re modernizing this unique design for the 21st century. The novel scotch-yoke mechanism is strong enough to withstand the forces of detonation, allowing pure isochoric, constant volume heat addition. This allows such an engine to be neither a diesel nor otto cycle engine, but rather a fickett-jacobs cycle. This means HCCI is achieved with ease and simplicity.

Efficiency.

The Eternal Engine lineup offers never-before-seen thermal efficiency to break the 60% barrier with a power-to-weight ratio of 4 HP/lbs coupled with an integral ability to run on multiple fuel types, reduced maintenance intervals, reduced maintenance time (20-minute overhaul), and an 8-fold improvement in lifespan. Measured EGTs are less than 220°F with negligible pollutants.

The pulse-detonation system exploits the Fickett-Jacobs cycle and achieves Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) consistently and reliably without the need for spark plugs, complex fuel injection, or ignition timing because its static compression ratio exceeds 20:1. Eternal Engines are engineered to be the opposition to Planned Obsolescence.
